Pininfarina's design broke somewhat with tradition and was striking and innovative. The side intakes were larger than on the previous model and this design element introduced the long side strakes that would become the Testarossa's most recognizable feature The evolution of the 12-cylinder boxer engine saw it equipped with four valves per cylinder: the most powerful engine mounted on a production sports car at the time of its launch. The Testarossa was a model that took its name from the company's history, being derived from the successful 500 and 250 Testa Rossa series of sports racing cars from the late fifties. The name Testa Rossa is Italian for Red Head, and refers to the color that the camshaft covers were painted on the sports racing models. Naturally, the modern Testarossa came equipped with similarly red painted camshaft covers. The Pininfarina designed replacement for the Boxer series was visually radically different from its predecessor, although it still featured a mid-mounted flat twelve engine as the previous 512 BBi. Gone was the sharp nosed wedge profile, to be replaced by a much softer rounded front end. The front wings flowed into one of the models most distinctive styling features, the deeply straked door panels that grew in width towards their trailing edge, before blending into very wide rear wings. The reason for the widening rear end and the body color straked doors, was the twin side mounted water radiators which received their cooling air via the door intakes. The matte black egg crate grill in the nose of the car provided a link with Ferrari tradition, bordered by combination driving side, turn indicator light assemblies, with paired headlights in retractable pods on the upper face of the nose. The repositioning of the radiators provided the benefit of additional luggage space in the nose, useable luggage space being something that had been a shortcoming of the Boxer series. Although the front track was only 12 mm greater than that of the 512 BBi, the rear track increased by a massive 105mm, making the car wedge shape in plan rather than profile. At the rear, the paired circular tail light arrangement that had been a styling feature for over a decade was gone. In their place was a full width horizontally slatted satin black hiding rectangular combination light units. The engine was the first four valves per cylinder flat twelve cylinder configuration unit fitted in a Ferrari road car but maintained the same cubic capacity of 4943cc of the 512 BBi. It had twin belt driven overhead camshafts per bank, now driven directly off the crankshaft instead of via idler gears on earlier Boxer models. The dry sump engine was longitudinally mounted in unit with the five speed transmission, in a very similar manner to that of the preceding Boxer series. It used Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection and produced 380bhp @ 5750rpm. The Testarossa remained in production with very few visual alterations for seven years until the end of 1991 with a total of 7177 being produced during its lifetime. What the added power does, is make the 488 Spider one of the fastest production cars on the planet. 0 to 62 mph only takes 3 seconds. 0 to 124 mph only takes 8.7 seconds. The top speed is 203 mph. The 488 Spider is more rigid than the 458 Spider, approximately 20% more to be exact. Due to this, the 488 Spider has no jarring or shaking and ride quality is nearly identical to that of the 488 GTB coupe. This was not the case with the 458 Spider which used a slightly softer suspension setup compared to the 458 Italia. The 488 Spider uses the same aluminum roof mechanism to go from Coupe to Spider in 14 seconds as the previous generation 458. It works flawlessly and can be lowered and closed while driving. When you really wind the Spider up, it handles just as sweetly as the coupe. The more rigid body allowed Ferrari to tune the suspension identically to the coupe, where previously the adaptive dampers were a little softer in Wet mode. Super-quick steering was achieved on both 488 variants thanks to 458 Speciale-width tires and calibration change which pivots the nose into curves with an almost unnatural deftness. The magnetorheological dampers balance bump absorption with rock-solid control, and all the while you've got that same playful balance that defined every 458. Tip the steering into a hairpin, squeeze the throttle, feel the e-diff tighten, and you rocket up the road either with tires on fire or Side-Slip Angle Control electronics managing grip and slip like you're a pro-racer. So, the 488 GTB's transformation into a Spider involved more work this time around: there's an additional vertical aluminum panel by the front axle, and a horizontal one at the rear of the car.
